in my mailbox (35) : mostly BEA edition

In My Mailbox, hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren, allows us to share our
current reads, and books we've received/checked out/purchased over the course of the week.

I apologise in advance for the quality of the photos - by the time I got home today from work to take them I lost all natural light and had to bring a lamp around as I took them, but it was hard to juggle my DSLR (plus focus) and the lamp, so some of them are super saturated and washed out.

This is also not everything that I picked up at BEA; my mum has a pile, and there's also a bag of adult fiction and another bag of things I got at the blogger's convention. There's also a few scattered in other places, depending on where I sit to read.

I said in my last BEA-related post that the bloggers are the best thing about the whole week, and many of these books would not be possible without their assistance. Aliya, Heidi, Grace, Olivia, Jenna - the list is limitless, and you guys seriously made my week (and the lines, the crowds, the everything worth it). Thank you! :)

Warning: This post is extraordinarily image heavy.

Nerdfighter designed cover. DFTBA!

I have to mention that I also met the incredibly lovely and even more adorable in person Victoria Schwab, who signed a copy of The Near Witch. I was really hoping I'd get a chance to run into her. This also applies to Aimée Carter (so sweet)!

Purchased/Gifted/Won:
Code Name Verity, Elizabeth Wein (20% off coupon. Thanks, B&N!)

Paper Towns, John Green (how did I not have a copy before?)
The Drowned Cities, Paolo Bacigalupi

Annnd, I got lucky! Look at this:

A signed copy, right off of the shelf! (On the bottom, in the back.)
I'm so, so excited for this one.

That's all for this week, folks! Time to go see Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein with Sherlock NYC! And what a gorgeous day it is to be brunching, discussing and watching a fabulous theatre adaptation of such a classic novel. BEA TOMORROW! :)

From the publisher:

Shine, Jeri Smith-Ready

This one appears in this week's IMM though I've already read it and started the review. My favorite installment of the trilogy. Before I even opened the book I just took a look at the thickness of it from the outside and maybe it's because my copy is paperback, but it's definitely seems like the longest story of the lot. The new cover design is gorgeous in person; I can definitely appreciate both styles of art direction. Thanks so, so kindly to Simon Pulse for sending this along. It was fabulous!

current reads, and books we've received/checked out/purchased over the course of the week.

This post sort of encapsulates why I'm so behind on the blogging life. I'll be sharing three piles of books today: one is my leisure books that I desperately would love to start but haven't been able to; the second is a the books I have to read for my Heroines class; the third is for one of my political theory classes (though I haven't purchased all of the books yet).

Pandemonium, Lauren Oliver                                            The Portrait of a Lady, Henry James
Article 5, Kristen Simmons                                                Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser
Harbinger, Sara Wilson Étienne                                         The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
Fever, Lauren Oliver                                                          The Custom of the Country, Edith Warton
The Inheritance Trilogy, Christopher Paolini                     Recollections of My Life as a Woman, DiPrima
Praisesong of the Widow, Paule Marshall
The House of Mirth, Edith Warton

The Politics of the Veil, Joan Wallach Scott
The Law of Peoples, John Rawls
and Bibliography for Research, David Weissbrodt et. all
Selected topics on human rights theory course packet

This doesn't include the packets upon packets I'm reading for my other theory class. Warning: if you're ever thinking about majoring in the social sciences, particularly political science and/or human rights be ready to readreadread. It's a good thing I kind of like that reading thing. ;)

You may kind of see why I'm slightly behind. In fact while I'm drafting this post I should be finishing up Sister Carrie, an accompanying journal article discussing the book, and preparing for a presentation on it and another presentation for another class tomorrow. It's also a good thing I like school! So, I have all of these great non-school leisure books and I'm going to start picking at them one by one, slowly, until I finish the pile I have before requesting any others (unless something on my I've-been-waiting-for-this-forever pile comes up).

What's in your mailboxes this week, friends? I reckon I'm probably a bit behind on le(s) new books so I'm super excited to check all of your posts out later. :)

in my mailbox (31)

In My Mailbox, hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren, allows us to share our
current reads, and books we've received/checked out/purchased over the course of the week.

This is sort of a catch-up IMM. This includes books I've received since December, though not
all of them. Books from NetGalley aren't pictured, and other adult fiction books aren't shown.
Neither are the heaps of books I've pre-ordered and will be coming out at the end of this month. So while
there might be a bit of a discrepancy, here's a pile for now!

From top:
The Probability of Miracles, Wendy Wunder (r) [Thank you, Penguin!]
Wintergirls, Laurie Halse Anderson
Everneath, Brodi Ashton
Feed, Mira Grant

Out of these, I've only read three of them yet:
The Probability of Miracles, The Hunger Games, and The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight.
The latter is one I really, really wanted to enjoy but had a problem with. I'll try and have a review for that (and for Far From the War both out by tomorrow sometime.) They might both turn into discussion posts, due to the topics.

I haven't read TFiOS yet mainly because I want to read it during a time when I can give it the attention it deserves, and not sneak peeks at it between homework and work. You might note that I have two copies. John signed both, and DFTBA'd the not-my-copy version (no Hanklerfish, sorry) - I'm thinking about having a giveaway, but we'll see. I do have two other giveaways planned, so stay tuned for those!

What's been your mailboxes lately? Anything you're just ridiculously chuffed over? I missed you guys to bits so feel free to ramble away in the comments!

Purchased:
Shift, Jeri Smith-Ready
Shatter Me, Tahereh Mafi (review)

Thanks to some great Black Friday deals, free shipping, and a coupon I was able to get some books. The hardcover of Shatter Me is too pretty to pass up, and I want to support Tahereh by purchasing the final copy. (Love, loved this book.) And Shade is one I read a few months back and found the premise really interesting, and just wasn't able to get Shift until now. I've already read it and am unsure how I feel about it. I want to like it, but I have some issues. I might write a non-review post about the things it brings up.

Also, don't forget my giveaway of two ebooks of Mistakes!

For review:
Truth (XVI #2), Julia Karr
Kevin's Point of View, Del Shannon

While I wasn't fully in love with XVI as much as I thought I'd be, so far I've heard that Truth is an improvement on it. I still really like the idea and am hoping that this will be the one to pull me back into the series. And thank you to Del Shannon for a copy of the first middle grade book to be reviewed here - it sounds like a lot of fun!

I didn't think I had any books this week mainly because I've worked all weekend (including Friday) and so got home so late that I neglected to check the mailbox until just before. You can expect a review for Truth within the next week as well as something else fun within the next couple of days. Although I'm drowning in both work and school work, I'm still trying to keep up as best I can. :)

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving/weekend (if you're not in America)!

current reads, and books we've received/checked out/purchased over the course of the week.

Purchased:
Scored, Lauren McLaughlin
Darker Still, Leanna Renée Hieber

Somehow I totally forgot to mention these last week when I got Bunheads*, but I also picked these guys up at the Stages on Pages tour. Lauren totally talked me into Scored (and there'll be a mini-review coming up for it) as it's about a dystopia in its formative stages, really interesting. That's the sort of build-up that I love. Also picked up, well, two curious copies of Darker Still. You might wonder why. You might be wondering if I'll have a giveaway. And you'd be right if you thought yes. Keep an eye out for that soonish. :)

Other than that, I haven't really been reading too much lately, as it's just about final paper writing time and crazy things are happening. Winter break, I cannot wait for thee! What's in your mailboxes, friends?

*You can find a mini-review here.

Purchased:
Bunheads, Sophie Flack

I saw Sophie speak at the Stages on Pages tour on Friday and I love how she explained the cover as the corps de ballet being something that looks like one girl multiplied over and over again, as sort of losing your identity. Anyhow, somewhat thankfully it's a slow book week as I have a huge back log to be pouring through interspersed with final paper drafting!

Anything fun in your mailboxes?

You can expect a review for this later today. :)

Purchased:
Bruiser, Neal Shusterman
I've been waiting for this one for a long, long time. (I sort of adore Neal.)
And then I just finally bought it, thanks to a B&N coupon!

It's been a slow week here for everything book wise. I haven't received or bought any books, but that's mainly because I've been pretty insanely school focused. (Well, I did purchase one non-fiction book.. :) I did, however, get a package from the amazing Kimberly Derting as part of the street team for The Pledge! If you're in the NYC area, keep an eye out at Posman's (Grand Central) and Books of Wonder within the next couple weeks for some of these:

photo by kimberly derting via her blog.

I haven't taken the items out of their home yet as I'm afraid the posters will never roll up that way again, but this is what I'll be working with and I'm pretty darn excited! I've already read the book and, well, when you mention languages you've already got me hooked.
What was in your mailbox this weekend? And if you haven't checked out Kristi's interview with some relatively new bloggers then you've missed my fabulous answers! Just kidding, but the questions were a lot of fun to answer and it was really neat to see how similar a lot of our answers were. You can check that out here.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Stay warm!

Welcome to this week's IMM: the lazy edition. The next two months are going to be absolutely insane for me as it's now midterm time and I have to start thinking about final paper topics and outlines for three of my classes on top of what seems like it's gong to be intense training for work. So, I apologise if I'm not here as much as I would like, but I am slowly trying to catch up.

Anyhow, I only ordered one book this week and the rest I got from my library's book fair:
The Scorpio Races, Maggie Stiefvater

Eragon, Christopher Paolini
The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman
Animal Farm, George Orwell (the only one I've read out of all of them!)
The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho
Never Let Me Go, Ishiguro Kazuo
The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold

Friday was an incredibly busy day. After class and before work I managed to sneak in a trip to Comic Con to see Tahereh Mafi and Veronica Rossi speak, as well as attend their signing. Might I say that the two of them were extremely sweet and smart, and waiting in line for an hour to get in was well worth the trip there. All of my books this week are from NYCC, including some not pictured that my bf got for me yesterday at Julie Kagawa's signing. (So. Excited.) Next year I am definitely going all three days!

For review:
Shatter Me, Tahereh Mafi

I couldn't not start this one and I find myself speechless on every page. Her words are absolutely stunning and the turn of phrase in this book is exquisite. It gives me hope and confidence, because I'm more of a descriptive writer, and, boy, this is proof that it can be done very, very well.

Immortal City, Scott Speer
Under the Never Sky, Veronica Rossi

I hadn't heard of Immortal City, but I asked the very nice lady at Penguin (their booth was fabulous!) what it was about and she had me hooked, so I'm going to try it. Under the Never Sky - very excited to start this one.

In paperback:
Across the Universe, Beth Revis
Ship Breaker, Paolo Baciagalupi

The paperback edition of Across the Universe is gorgeous. It really is.

Purchased:
Fire, Kristin Cashore

I haven't read Graceling yet, although I was assured that I didn't need to before I start this one, although I probably will just to have everything in order. I'm happy to have one of her books on my shelf after so long on my TBR!

For review:
Virtuosity, Jessica Martinez

Thank you kindly to Greenwillow Books and Simon Pulse!

Purchased:
The Adoration of Jenna Fox, Mary E. Pearson

I'm not sure if I'll be putting up a review for Carrier of the Mark, but if you guys are interested I will write one up. Has anyone else read it yet?

For Carrier of the Mark I also received a postcard, signed bookmarks and a bookplate:

I attended Teen Author Reading Night at the Jefferson Market branch of the NYPL. All of the ladies involved were amazing. I sat in front of the sweet Nova Ren Suma and got to chat with Jocelyn Davies and Michelle Hodkin. Michelle also signed my copy of Mara Dyer and she is seriously the nicest, most adorable person. See them if you can! So, so worth it.
Answer: Noah? YES.

in my mailbox (23)

I realllly wanted to do a video IMM this week, but time is just not allowing for it. I might have to add one in on Sunday afternoon when I get back. We'll see. As is, I'm pretty chuffed with my week in books!

For review:

A Million Suns, Beth Revis
Far From the War, Jeffrey David Payne

Bought: As a caveat, uhm, a lot of great books came out this week. I couldn't help myself!
Leviathan, Scott Westerfeld
Lola and the Boy Next Door, Stephanie Perkins (review)

I was sent Goliath, so I had to get Leviathan. That's the way my mind rationalised it. Lola I don't even have to explain, but Mara Dyer came so quickly! I pre-ordered it ages ago and was worried that it wouldn't get here in time to participate in her epic book contest. That one's going on a trip with me tomorrow; I plan on getting a good picture.

Birthmarked, Caragh M. O'Brien
The Name of the Star, Maureen Johnson

I went to Books of Wonder to find Lola, only to discover that they didn't have it in. But they did have tons of signed copies that were beckoning to me. I originally was only going to get Birthmarked as I have Prized to read, but I saw piles of The Name of the Star behind the counter and lamented the fact that I had missed the signing due to an essay, and they took pity on me so kindly and let me pick up a signed version! I had a hard time taking a photo of that, and my hand looks terrible and clawish, but here is the sort of cool picture of the autographs.

in my mailbox (22)

Just a few books this week, which is nice as it helps me to catch up. (I wrote a review for Crossed here.)
I've started to pre-compose some other reviews and mini-reviews so hopefully we'll be seeing those over the course of the week!

For review:

Crossed, Ally Condie
The Power of Six, Pittacus Lore

Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

in my mailbox (21)

This will have to be the semi-quickest IMM that I've ever done as I'm quite pressed for time. Yikes. I tried to take pictures from my phone, though it was done rather quickly.

Purchased:

In His Majesty's Service (Temeraire), Naomi Novik
The Wise Man's Fear, Patrick Rothfuss
Sapphique, Catherine Fisher (didn't much like Incarceron)
The Magnolia League, Katie Crouch
Marcelo in the Real World, Francisco X. Stork (sooo excited for this one)
Nightshade, Andrea Cremer

Chasing Brooklyn, Lisa Schroeder
Last Sacrifice, Richelle Mead (last one that I needed!)
Specials, Scott Westerfeld (still need Extras)
The Exiled Queen, Cinda Williams Chima
Flying Blind, Deborah Cooke
Personal Demons, Lisa Desrochers

Circle of Fire, Michelle Zink (need book one!)
Guardian of the Gate, Michelle Zink
Already Dead, Charlie Huston (love him)
The Mockingbirds, Daisy Whitney
Torment, Lauren Kate

For Review:

Goliath, (Leviathan #3), Scott Westerfeld

Thank you so kindly to Simon & Schuster for this one!

in my mailbox (20)

This was an amazing week, IMM-wise.

The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern
Witchlanders, Lena Coakley

A signed, finished copy of The Night Circus courtesy of Doubleday. Thank you so much - I will sing the praises of this book for quite a while. The finished version of this book is stunning: the title design is holographic, and the circus design is slightly raised and textured. The inside jacket is black & white striped - so much detail and love went into it.

A signed, finished copy of Witchlanders courtesy of Lena Coakley! I was so, so pleasantly surprised that this one had a gorgeous, red bow on it. The cover of it is difficult to photograph, but the cover is so shimmery and lovely.
Torrent, Lisa T. Bergren

A signed, finished copy of Torrent courtesy of Lisa T. Bergren and some really pretty, glossy signed bookmarks. I hadn't expected this one to be signed when it arrived and so it was quite a happy shock for me. I read this one in a few hours and looooved it.

This is a scheduled post, as I don't think I'll be online much today for obvious reasons. I look forward to seeing what's popped into your mailboxes.

in my mailbox (19)

A nice, slow week this week, but I received some neat stuff.

Imaginary Girls, Nova Ren Suma
Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Sampler), Lain Taylor

Nova Ren had posted on Twitter a while back that she had signed some stock at Posman's (in Grand Central) and since I'm in that bookshop most every day, I've been checking to see whether or not one would appear. And the other day, shockingly, I saw one!

The Daughter of Smoke & Bone sampler is courtesy of Oblong Books - thanks Suzanna! It had some fun swag that I've already shared with other people. I'd say what it is, but they're probably going to be reading this. Small surprises, you know. :)

And I know that I've been behind in commenting and posting, but school has just started and I'm trying to figure out a nice pattern to fall into. Once that happens, I'll be back more, I promise! Have a great extended weekend, everyone.

in my mailbox (18): irene edition

All is thankfully safe and well here, although it's still raining and windy. With everyone being in one piece, including the cats and no trees on the house, well, I consider it a massive achievement. I've amassed quite a few books again and so I threw together a vlog, although please pardon my appearance. I haven't slept for more than a few hours in a day or so and I look like a creature from Ann Aguire's Enclave. (Yeah, I'm using book references.)

Books mentioned:
Blood Red Road, Moira Young
Wither, Lauren DeStefano
Unwind, Neal Shusterman
Across the Universe, Beth Revis
Anna and the French Kiss, Stephanie Perkins
The Magician King, Lev Grossman
Looking for Alaska, John Green
Bloodlines, Richelle Mead
This Dark Endeavour, Kenneth Oppel
A Need So Beautiful, Suzanne Young
Full Tilt, Neal Shusterman
Ballad, Maggie Stiefvater

I'll catch up with your mailboxes after Tangled. And a nap! Stay safe, everyone.
